Six Trails to Uhuru Peak

Every official route to Kilimanjaro's summit, and what actually separates them. I've climbed each one myself.

Choosing Your Route

What Actually Separates the Six

There isn't a single "best" route up Kilimanjaro, only the one that fits how many days you have, how much comfort you want, and how your body handles altitude. Here's what actually separates them:

  • 01A hut roof, or a tent: Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation; every other route means camping.
  • 02More days for altitude: Lemosho's 7 or 8-day itinerary gives the most gradual acclimatization profile on the mountain.
  • 03Fewer people on the trail: Umbwe and Rongai see the least traffic of the six routes.
  • 04Scenery over speed: Lemosho and Rongai trade a faster summit bid for some of the widest, quietest views on the mountain.
  • 05Strength over comfort: Umbwe is the steepest, most direct line, and should only be attempted by strong, fast-acclimatizing hikers.
