The Marangu or main route is by far the most popular way to the summit. The ascent is more gradual and no climbing gear is required. The accommodation on the way up and down is provided in mountain huts with all the basic necessities. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara Hut (2700m) and Kibo Hut (4700m), and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut (3720m) which is also used for descent. Climbers are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags should be brought along. There are communal dining halls, washrooms and toilets. It usually takes 5 days / 4 nights for the round trip. This itinerary is for 6 days to offer higher success probability of summiting by adding extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Day 0
Arrive in Tanzania
- You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha town.
- You will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
Day 1
Arusha to Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts
- Elevetion: 1879m to 2720m / 6165ft to 8924ft
- Distance: 8km / 5mi
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Montana forest
You will be transferred to Marangu gate from the hotel and do a registration at the gate. Afterwards, you will begin trekking though the rainforest to Mandara hut. Here you will have dinner and overnight at Mandara hut.
Day 2
Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts
- Elevation: 2720m to 3720m / 8924ft to 12.205ft
- Distance 12km / 7.5mi
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast you will out climb the rainforest and continue trekking to Horombo Hut where you will trek through rolling moorlands and get your fist clear view of kibo peak.
Day 3
Spend an extra day here at Horombo
This would absolutely be a leisure day for you. Just hike to Zebra Rock for high altitude practice and then return back to Horombo hut for lunch. No work: rest until dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts
- Elevation: 3720m to 4703m / 12.205ft to 15.430ft
- Distance: 9km / 5.6mi
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
After the breakfast you trek past the last water point to reach Kibo saddle -a great desert between the two peaks Mawenzi and Kibo. An early dinner and overnight at Kibo hut.
Day 5
Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts
- Elevation: 4703m to 5895m to 3720m / 15.430ft to 19.341ft to 12.205ft
- Distance: 6km / 3.7mi ascent, 15km / 9.3mi descent
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up
- Habitat: Arctic
Wake at midnight for a light breakfast then prepare for your summit ascent. As you know that you have to trek in the darkness, so carry your headlamp/ flashlight with you. Pack your warm clothes to make yourself comfortable on the summit. As it would be too cold. Remember, your aim is to reach Uhuru peak shortly before or after sunrise to watch the great sight of the sunrise. Yet don't get hurried. Trek slowly (polepole)through steep scree or possibly snow. This s the most difficult part of your climb and always try to reach at the Gilman's point latest by 4-6 Am. At this point you will have a view of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you. It is because, after that you would have to take another 2 hours trek to reach at Uhuru. Stay for a short period there at Uhuru for photography and start descending to Kibo huts, to have lunch, rest and collect your equipments and continue down trough re-cross the saddle to the Horombo huts. Have dinner and overnight at Horombo Camp. Have dinner and overnight at Horombo Camp.
Day 6
Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate to Arusha
- Elevation: 3720m to 1879m / 12.205ft to 6165ft
- Distance: 19km / 11.8mi
- Hiking Time: 4-7 hours
After a long sleep you will be awaked for breakfast and pack, continue your descent through the moorland to Mandara huts.proceed through lush forest to Marangu gate. After the gate sign out, a vehicle will take you back Arusha at the hotel where it is definitely time for your certificate presentation and celebration!
Day 7
Kilimanjaro International Airport
After a good night rest and breakfast at the hotel, our transfer vehicle will be ready to pick you up and take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport to connect with your flight back home. But if you wish to extend your program and proceed with safari kindly let us know so that we can arrange it in advance.
